OpenAI is reportedly in talks to buy Windsurf for $3B, with news expected later this week

OpenAI is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire Windsurf—an AI-powered coding assistant previously known as Codeium—for approximately $3 billion. If finalized, this would represent OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date and a significant move into the growing market for AI developer tools. Windsurf offers a competitive suite of coding assistants that rival popular platforms like GitHub Copilot. The company recently underwent a rebranding from Codeium and secured over $75 million in funding from high-profile investors such as Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst. This potential acquisition underscores OpenAI’s strategy to expand beyond its flagship ChatGPT product and directly enter the developer tooling space with proprietary offerings.

The deal could also create a competitive clash with Anysphere, the maker of Cursor, another AI coding assistant that is backed by OpenAI’s own Startup Fund. This development suggests a more aggressive stance by OpenAI to consolidate market share in AI-assisted programming, potentially at the expense of startups it previously supported through investment arms. While the acquisition has not been officially confirmed, sources say that news could emerge later this
week. The move reflects OpenAI’s growing ambition to establish itself not just as a provider of foundational models but also as a dominant player in the application layer of AI, particularly in developer tools.
